One of the things that you should try when you travel to Sai Gon is the drinks here. Below are my top list of must-try drinks in Ho Chi Minh city.
Nước sâm – herbal tea
Nước sâm is one of the local drinks that many local people in Ho Chi Minh city enjoy because of its medical effection.
With different ingredients which each of them is a tradional medicine, nước sâm is good for you heath
Nước sâm is a type of tea that people normally “cook” a mixture of leaves, roots and some plants. They have the purify, detoxifying effects in traditional medicine persective. People usually use sugar cane, corn stalks, roots of imperata cylindrica, and cook them with alum sugar.
This drink is really suitable for a hot day. You can find this drink in the side walk, in the restaurants or one really famous place sell this drink: Nước sâm Su Su (421 Vĩnh Viễn street, ward 8, district 10). This place has been sold for over 9 years and been loved by the local people here
Nước Mía – sugar cane juice
Nước mía is one of the most popular drinks in Vietnam beside ice tea (trà đá). This drink is just the sugar cane juice with ice. Normally people will add kumquat juice into the drink, some place like My Tho, Tien Giang they add jackfruit and peanut into the sugar cane juice (a really good combination though).
This drink is super popular in Vietnam and other Asian countries because of the taste and it is very affordable.
In the hot summer, you are susceptible to frequent dehydration, sugarcane juice helps rehydrate and replenish lost electrolytes. This is a rich source of Mn, Fe, Ka, Mg and Ca.
In Ho Chi Minh you can find this drink in almost every where. Local people sell this drink on the side walk with a sugar cane compressor machine.
Cà phê – Vietnamese coffee
When you travel to Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnamese coffee is the drink you never should miss (especially if you are a coffee lover). Vietnamese use the Robusta bean much more in the coffee powder (80%), which make the coffee in Vietnam stronger and bitter.
The best coffee for me is cà phê sữa đá – ice milk coffee. Vietnamese use the condensed milk for the milk coffee, which make the coffee sweet and creamy.
You can try the Vietnamese coffee in the coffee shops, street vendors, in the restaurant. It is sold everywhere.
Sữa Bắp – corn milk
Corn milk is one of my favourite drink. Sweet corn is boiled then mix with water and compressed to get corn milk. Then people will mix the corn milk with sugar and milk.
Corn milk is easy to drink and delicious and nutritious, does not contain cholesterol
Sinh tố – smoothie
Smoothie also super popular in Vietnam. You have various options when it come to smoothie, not only strawberry and banana. You have soursop, banana, strawberry, avocado, carot, water melon, mango, sapote, passion fruit. My favourite one is soursop which is a tropical fruit has the sour and sweet fruit.
The fruits is pick up from garden then mix with condensed milk and ice. The price of smoothie is from 15000 – 40000 VND depend on what you order and where you drink it.
